A while back, I attended a concert of one of my favorite artists, and I was excited. My friend and I who attended realized how many people around us were recording practically the entire concert. They were watching the show through their phone instead of sitting back and enjoying the show. Here I was proud of the fact that I remembered to take one photo of the performance.
It reminded me of the difference between FOMO and JOMO.
You may have heard of FOMO – the Fear of Missing Out. It’s the reason many of us are addicted to our phones. We are afraid of missing out on the latest Social Media post, the latest news, or how many people liked our post. Sometimes we’re just bored and bury ourselves in our phone. Many of us have experienced the anxiety of being without wifi or Internet access. Things may be happening, and we don’t know it!
But have you heard of JOMO – the Joy of Missing Out? The Joy of Missing Out means you walk away from your phone and be present in the moment. It may take some practice to learn to JOMO because our addiction is deep.
To experience JOMO, it may mean you delete apps and Social Media accounts no longer serving you and read through the Social Media usage report the new iPhone sends you (gulp!).
Enjoy the concert, drink in the scenery, and spend time with your loved ones.
