My New Favorite Apps

I’ve been playing with newly discovered apps on my iPad and iPhone. So here’s the lowdown:

Editions logoEditions. This iPad app is similar to Flipboard and Zite. You can choose the topics you’re interested in reading about (celebrity news, local news, etc.), and each day you will receive a new “edition” of the top headlines.

Jib Jab Jr.JibJab Jr. JibJab, best known for satirical political videos and Elf Yourself, has entered the children’s book iPad app market with JibJab Jr. With the books, you can make your children or nieces and nephews the star of the story. Upload their photos and enter their names, and your little ones will become the hero.

If you have more than one child, you can easily change the character of the book with a swipe of your finger. A new book is released each month, and you can purchase each book individually for $7.99 or subscribe at $3.99 per month to receive the new title.

Color Snap logoSherwin Williams Color Snap. (Free) I saw the app advertised in a decorating magazine, and my home renovating self couldn’t resist. If you’re like me, you come across paint colors when you’re out and about, but other than taking a photo, it’s hard to match. With Color Snap, you take the photo, use your finger to pick the color you want, and then the matching color pops up. You can even see the coordinating colors that the main color goes with.

NotesyNotesy. ($4.99) When you have a brilliant idea, you can use Notesy to capture it. The app links to Dropbox and actually creates a Notesy folder. If you already use other note-taking apps, such as Noteshelf and Penultimate, this may feel redundant.

Gas Buddy logoGas Buddy. (Free) Instead of driving around to look at gas prices, use Gas Buddy to find the prices at gas stations located near you.

Vlingo logoVlingo. (Free) Since Apple so cruelly took away the Siri app for the new iPhone, there’s been a bit of a mad scramble to find similar apps we can use in its place. With Vlingo, tap the screen and make your request, such as “Find a coffee shop” or “Call Mom and tell her I’m running late.” With Siri getting such great press of late, I’m sure these type of apps will only get better and better.
