The X Factor: Are you wasting your gifts?

The X Factor television show reminds us to pursue our talentsWhen I was a teenager, I wanted to be a rock star. Just one little problem. I can’t sing to save my life. So with a serious lack of singing talent, I had to develop my other interests in writing, reading, history, art, interior decorating and listening to music.

After watching the last British X Factor on You Tube, I was intrigued by the new American version Simon Cowell was bringing to us. For some reason, I never watched American Idol despite buying the music of Kelly Clarkson and Adam Lambert.

As I watched the first episodes with the auditions, I saw the parade of hopefuls come through, and I was amazed by how many of the ones who were great singers seemed humbled, shocked and surprised when the judges and the crowd went wild for them. Some of them have dreamed of that moment for years. I thought to myself, “What a shame to have so much talent and not do anything about it for all those years.”

Then that little voice – the one we all have – spoke to me. “Well, how often do you waste your own talents there, little missy?” Oh heck. The little voice was right.

This week we are all remembering Steve Jobs, a creative genius and innovator. He was someone who encouraged people to live their lives with purpose and meaning, and that’s exactly what he did. He did not waste his years.

I love to write, and I’ve always wanted to write a book. God knows, I have tons of pages written for about a dozen books lying around, but I haven’t finished anything. You know how it is. Life gets in the way, but there isn’t really a good excuse of squandering my own talents. What am I waiting for?

So I’ve listened to my little voice and am getting back to work. Now it’s your turn. What are your talents? What are you doing to honor them?
