Shameless Plug: Buy This Book
Posted By janice on April 25, 2011
Tomorrow a new book is hitting the bookstores called Savvy Auntie: The Ultimate Guide for Cool Aunts, Great-Aunts, Godmothers, and All Women Who Love Kids, written by Melanie Notkin, the Savvy Auntie herself.
I am in Louisville at the moment visiting two of my nephews for Easter. Tomorrow I’m making my way to New York City for the Savvy Auntie Book Launch party on April 27th.
Melanie, who created the SavvyAuntie Web site, wrote the book for all of us women who are Aunties by Relation, Aunties by Choice, Great-Aunts, Godmothers, or Women Who Just Love Kids. Auntiehood is a lifestyle and a movement.
We’ve come a long way, Aunties
Long gone are the stereotypes of spinster aunts locked up in the attic somewhere. Today’s Savvy Aunties are busy with their nieces and nephews, their own lives, their careers and their communities. More adults are delaying marriage and child-bearing, and we’re playing bigger roles in the lives of our nieces and nephews because of it.
Melanie and I “met” on Twitter way back in 2008, and when she was seeking subject area experts for Savvy Auntie.com, I volunteered my organizing expertise. I became The Organized Auntie and later on a contributor to the Savvy Auntie book.
Melanie is an amazing person, and she has helped us Aunties articulate how life-changing it is to become a Savvy Auntie.
Nothing compares to Auntiehood
Being an Aunt has changed my life, and I can’t imagine a world without my darling nieces and nephews. I never realized how much I could fiercly love anyone until they came along. They make me laugh, they make me cry, they make me a better person.
I only wish this book and the Savvy Auntie website were around when I became an Auntie over 18 years ago. Of course, the Internet wasn’t around back in dinosaur time. I now have 10 nieces, nephews and godchildren, ranging in age from 18 years old to seven months old. I tell the “newer” ones how lucky they are I had on-the-job training all those years before their arrival.
Buy the book. Buy a copy for your own Savvy Auntie to thank her for being such a fabulous Aunt. Buy it for a friend who’s about to be an Auntie for the first time.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to play with my nephews.
